Between 1975 and 1978 he worked as a hotel musician in Bermuda . He also accompanied Gerry Mulligan , Joe Morello and Mel Lewis . In 1987 Dial presented his debut album Never Is Now with Trio . This was followed by the album Postcards from Downunder , which was presented together with the multi-instrumentalist James Morrison and which was very successful in Australia, where the pianist spent some time. After his return to New York, he formed a quartet with Dick Oatts in 1989, which included Jay Anderson and Joey Baron ; it performed on Dial & Oatts with a string orchestra and on Brassworks (1990) with a brass ensemble, before tackling standards on Dial & Oatts Verses Cole Porter (1992, with drummer Jeff Hirshfield ). The quartet also worked with a choir on later projects (setting Walt Whitman's poems to music in 2011).
