Jay Anderson (* 24. October 1955 in Ontario (California) ) is an American double bassist of the Modern Jazz .

Live and act

Anderson grew up in Long Beach (California) and initially played the piano before switching to bass when he was twelve. He studied at Long Beach State University before joining Woody Herman's orchestra in 1978 . From 1979 to 1981 he accompanied Carmen McRae . He has lived in New York since 1982 and was a member of Lew Tabackin's band until 1987 ; he also worked with Bennie Wallace and Ira Sullivan and Red Rodney . He then played with Eliane Elias , Steve Khan , Warren Bernhardt , Michael Brecker and Bob Mintzer and, from the 1990s, with Toots Thielemans , Lynne Arriale and Joe Sample . He also worked in the big bands of Toshiko Akiyoshi , Mel Lewis and Maria Schneider . Anderson is one of the busiest studio musicians; he worked with Frank Zappa , Tom Waits , Michel Legrand and Dr. John as well as Allen Ginsberg , Chaka Khan , Mike Stern , Paul Bley , Rudy Linka , Terumasa Hino or Mitch Watkins . In 2011 he worked on Ryan Truesdells Centennial - Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans . Four productions in which he participated have been nominated for a Grammy ; the album Falling into You by Céline Dion won as well as two albums of Maria Schneider, in which he participated, this award.

Anderson is Professor of Jazz Bass at the Manhattan School of Music .
