Sebastian Schunke (born May 16, 1973 in Göttingen ) is a German jazz pianist , composer and lawyer . He is considered an "important innovator" of Latin jazz .

Live and act

Schunke first studied law at the University of Göttingen . After graduating, he moved to New York, where he wanted to do a law internship. There the classically trained pianist became increasingly interested in Afro-Cuban rhythms and studied jazz piano at the Manhattan School of Music . After moving to Berlin, he graduated in jazz piano from the Hanns Eisler Music Academy . His teachers included Garry Dial , Hilton Ruiz , Sonny Bravo and Alan Gampel.

Schunke won the jazz prize of the Berlin Senate four times and released albums on the Timba-Records international, Connector-Records and NWog Records label. On his first CD Symbiosis , Schunke created a Euro-Latin style in 2000, which moves on the borderline between modern European jazz and American Latin jazz . Antonio Sánchez , Dafnis Prieto , John Benitez, Richie Flores, Yosvany Terry and Peter Brainin accompany him on the Symbiosis CD . On the following records, Mouvement (2004) and Vida Pura (2007), Schunke worked with the European artists Felipe Cabrera (formerly bassist of Gonzalo Rubalcaba ), Mario Marejon El Indio, Lukmil Perez, Chris Dahlgren and the Cuban singer Olvido Ruiz Castellanos . In 2008 the collaboration with Paquito D'Rivera led to the recording of the CD Back in New York . In 2011 he recorded the CD Life and Death with his Berlin quartet (released in 2014). On the Genesis CD . Mystery and Magic brings together its sextet of musicians from Germany, Austria, Russia, Uruguay and Curacao. On the CD Elusive Beauty (2018), Schunke alienates his Euro-Latin style even further by increasingly incorporating elements of new music of the 21st century, especially the European avant-garde, thus establishing the "Fourth Stream" based on Gunther Schuller.

In 2004 Schunke accompanied the German Federal President Horst Köhler as a musical representative on his first trip abroad to Africa . In addition, Schunke has given concerts with his projects in Latin America, China, Europe and the USA. Schunke lives in Berlin and New York and teaches at the Jazz Institute Berlin and the Berlin School of Economics and Law . He was also visiting professor for jazz and composition at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago de Chile. In addition to his musical work, he has written several publications on the topics of music business and music law.
