The Jazz Institute Berlin (JIB) is a joint institution of the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin and the Berlin University of the Arts .

Foundation and structure

The Jazz Institute Berlin was founded on July 1st, 2005 with the aim of pooling the resources of the jazz departments of both universities in view of the austerity policy of the Berlin Senate in the education system. It went into operation in the 2005/2006 winter semester. With the re-establishment, the teaching staff of both universities (including musicians such as Sigi Busch , David Friedman , John Hollenbeck , Judy Niemack-Prins , Gerard Presencer , Jiggs Whigham ) moved to the joint institute.

The JIB is divided into the departments woodwind , brass , vocals , piano , stringed instruments , drum percussion , mallets as well as science, theory and media . It is led by the artistic director Wolfgang Köhler (HfM Hanns Eisler), and the managing director Björn Sickert (HfM "Hanns Eisler"). The artistic director is the chairman of the Joint Commission , the central decision-making body of the JIB; his deputy is the managing director.

In January 2009 the company moved into its own building with rehearsal rooms, a recording studio and a café in a former cinema of the film school on Einsteinufer in Charlottenburg . The centerpiece is the Georg Neumann Hall, an event hall for up to 329 visitors.
