Holly Schlott

Holly Schlott (born April 20, 1958 in Oelsnitz / Vogtl. As Volker Schlott ) is a German jazz musician .

Live and act

After taking clarinet lessons at the music school in Oelsnitz / Vogtland, Schlott studied alto and soprano saxophone and flute at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in Berlin from 1974 to 1979 . As early as 1977 she began as a professional musician in the rock jazz band Fusion . After working for a long time in other projects by Wolfgang Fiedler (such as a trio with Charlie Eitner ) and since 1980 in Uwe Kropinski's quartet , Schlott founded his first own group in 1983 with tenor saxophonist Thomas Klemm as well as Günter Bartel (bass) and Peter Gröning (drums).

In 1986 Schlott performed for the first time with her wind quartet Fun Horns , which, in addition to her and Klemm, also included trumpeter Rainer Brennecke and trombone and tuba Jörg Huke . The breakthrough came with the Fun Horns in 1988 with a “ Jazzbühne ” concert; International tours followed, including to South America at the invitation of the Goethe Institute . Besides the founders Schlott and Huke, the current line-up consists of Falk Breitkreuz and Nikolaus Neuser . Favo was created in a duo with Breitkreuz .

Between 1985 and 1987 Schlott also worked as a soloist in the Radio Bigband Berlin and performed with the Hannes Zerbe brass band as well as with the college band . She continued to play in the GDR jazz orchestra , with Pascal von Wroblewsky and, since 1992, in Gebhard Ullmann's Ta Lam Acht . Schlott led his own quartet and has appeared at international festivals and tours with John Tchicai , Tony Lakatos , Harry Beckett , Cecil Taylor , Joachim Kühn , Simon Nabatov , Tony Oxley , Bobby Previte , Günter Baby Sommer and Phil Haynes . She was a guest in Pierre Dørges New Jungle Orchestra . She plays in a duo with the pianists Dieter Köhnlein and Henning Schmiedt . She also worked with Mikis Theodorakis and the singer Maria Farantouri for several CD productions and numerous concerts.

Schlott has been working regularly with the jazz pianist Reinmar Henschke since 1993 . Together they recorded the albums influence (1993) and Cafe Thiossane (2005). There has been an intensive collaboration since 1996 with the singer and Jocelyn B. Smith .

Schlott has been a lecturer at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin since 1992 and also composes theater and film music . In 1995 Schlott published the playbook for saxophone Saxofun .

In 2018, on the occasion of the release of the solo album 2 Spirts , Schlott declared her transgender identity and changed her first name to Holly.

Awards

In 1990 Schlott won the Berlin Senate Studio Prize. In 2003 the "Ella" ( Berlin Jazz Award ) followed with the Rolf von Nordenskjöld Orchestra . In 1996 Schlott's album Why Not received the award " Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik ".
