Henning Schmiedt (* 1965 in Schlema ) is a German pianist , composer , arranger and producer . He has composed several film and theater music and has worked as a composer, arranger, interpreter and producer on over 70 CDs with international artists such as Mikis Theodorakis , Maria Farantouri , Zülfü Livaneli and Jocelyn B. Smith .

Life

Schmiedt was born the son of a Protestant pastor who emigrated to the GDR in the late 1950s to do missionary work there. Schmiedt's brother is the guitarist and producer Wolfgang Schmiedt . From the age of seven, Henning Schmiedt received piano lessons and sang in church choirs. He later studied piano at the Rostock Conservatory and acquired knowledge of composition and arrangement. In 1985 Schmiedt began his professional career as a musician with the jazz formation College . Just a year later he was playing with soul singer Angelika Weiz , Wolfgang Fiedler's jazz rock band Fusion and the Latin jazz band Bossa-Nostra .

From 1989 he devoted himself to jazz and contemporary music and composed several music for films and theater. This was followed in 1990 by the first own concepts, the Isle of Eyesland projects, which also included a quartet with Falk Breitkreuz , Peter Machailow and Thomy Jordi.

Collaboration with Mikis Theodorakis and Maria Farantouri

By participating in the production of Theodorakis sings Theodorakis in 1991, he met the Greek composer, writer and politician Mikis Theodorakis , whom he accompanied on his European tour four years later. There Schmiedt met Maria Farantouri . He became arranger and musical director of the European tour “Poetica” by Maria Farantouri and a year later the European tour for the “Asmata” production (Mikis Theodorakis and Maria Farantouri). Much more joint work followed.

Collaboration with Jocelyn B. Smith

This was not his only cross-cultural and cross-border encounter. In 1992 he became a member of the new soul band Maxx-Baby and the German-Turkish line-up TAKSIM around the singer Sema . In addition, a year later he worked with the singer Jocelyn B. Smith , which lasted until 2008 , during which various publications such as the CD Blue Light & Nylons were created, for which he received the Jazz Award from the Federal Association of the Phonographic Industry for his achievements as arranger and producer was awarded. In addition, he accompanied Jocelyn B. Smith on various tours and concerts such as the central ecumenical memorial service for the victims of the flood disaster in South Asia in 2005 and the benefit concert by RBB Radio Multikulti , which was performed live across Germany's borders with the support of Deutsche Welle out to Asia and Australia, Africa and Europe. In addition, several radio stations in Europe, the USA and Asia were connected live.

Further important appearances and collaborations

Schmiedt was also a pianist in The Silent Jazz Ensemble for a while . In 1999 he was the first German to give a concert at the “ Holocaust Memorial Museum ” in Washington with Maria Farantouri with an arrangement of the Mauthausen cycle for voice, piano, cello and live electronics. Schmiedt arranged the music for the symphonic millennium event on the Acropolis with Mikis Theodorakis and the orchestra of the Athens Opera. The concert was broadcast to 800 million people by the BBC and CNN. Also in 2000 he took part in the Concert for Peace with the participation of Maria Farantouri and Zülfü Livaneli in the Townhall New York.

In December 2004 and March 2005, the Requiem Paula was co-produced with the RBB, soloists Hagen Matzeit and Jocelyn B. Smith . The content of the work is based on the autobiographical texts of the German-Japanese artist Heinrich Johann Radeloff and describes the discovery of a girl and her family who perished in the last days of the Second World War. Henning Schmiedt chose the form of the requiem, the funeral mass, to set text passages to music. Since the name Paula can be found in many languages around the world, Schmiedt dedicated the Requiem to all Paulas, all children who become victims of war in different ways. The use of the children's choir of the Komische Oper Berlin achieved a corresponding effect in the performance of the work.

Other prominent crossroads with well-known musicians resulted from various projects and CD recordings with, among others, Bobby Previte , Volker Schlott , Charles Lloyd , Halil Karaduman , Petros Pandis , Okay Temiz , Al di Meola , Ara Dinkjian , Attila Engin , Ilhan Ersahin , Georgeos Theodorakis , John Tchicai , Dudu Tucci , Lauren Newton , Max Rebensburg and Lakis Karnezis .
