Life

In the 1970s, Livaneli was forced to leave Turkey due to repression and imprisonment due to his political views. He lived first in Stockholm, later in Paris and Athens. In 1984 he returned to Turkey, where he gave his famous concert with the song Merhaba (“Welcome”) in Istanbul and was celebrated by many people.

Livaneli has received many national and international awards in his life. His songs have been interpreted and translated into many languages by artists such as Joan Baez , Maria Farantouri and Jocelyn B. Smith. Concerts have taken him to numerous countries, including Germany. As an important person in culture, art and politics, Livaneli has written almost 300 songs and 30 film scores. He composed the music for five plays and one ballet; he is also the author of several books. His songs based on poems by Nâzım Hikmet are also particularly well known .

Livaneli and the Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis have enjoyed a long-term collaboration and friendship . With him he founded the Committee for Turkish-Greek Friendship in 1986 in order to promote mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence between the Greek and Turkish people. Together with Mikis Theodorakis and Maria Farantouri, in many concerts with Turkish and Greek songs, he repeatedly gave signals for peaceful coexistence. He was often compared to Theodorakis and referred to as the Turkish Theodorakis . In 1997 the federal government honored both of them for their peace work with a ceremony on the Petersberg near Bonn.

Livaneli has directed three films and received the Palm Golden of the Valencia Festival of Mediterranean Cinema in 1989 and the Golden Antigone at the Montpellier Film Festival . The film Sis ("Fog") was nominated for the best European film . His films have been screened in Turkey, the USA , France , Germany , Switzerland and Japan and have been shown on television stations such as the BBC , WDR and on Spanish, Canadian and Japanese television networks.

In October 1986, Livaneli, along with Federico Mayor , Yaşar Kemal , Arthur Miller and other well-known artists and thinkers, accepted an invitation from Tschynggys Aitmatow to the first Issyk Kul forum , which took place in Kyrgyzstan . Subsequent meetings were held in Wengen , Granada, and Mexico City .

In 1995 he was appointed personal advisor to UNESCO Director General Federico Mayor and in 1996 he was appointed UNESCO ambassador. In 2002 he was elected a member of the Grand National Assembly (Parliament) of Turkey for the Republican People's Party (CHP) , of which he was a member until 2007. In 2009 he was awarded the Orhan Kemal Prize for Literature .

In the late 1990s, Livaneli began writing columns for the daily Sabah . In 2002 he moved to Vatan . In 2013 he stopped this activity in protest against the interference with the newspaper by the new owner. Since 2016, columns have been published in the Cumhuriyet at irregular intervals .

In 2016 he resigned as UNESCO ambassador during the Turkish offensive against the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Diyarbakir , in which the military destroyed parts of the old town, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Quote

At dusk a man came into the village and said he was the prophet. But the peasants didn't believe him. 'Prove it!' They demanded. The man pointed to the fortress wall opposite and asked: 'If this wall speaks [...] do you believe me?' "By God, we believe you," they cried. The man turned to the wall, held out his hand and ordered: 'Speak, O wall!' Then the wall began to say, 'This man is not a prophet. He is deceiving you. He's a liar. ' "
