Wolfgang Schmiedt

Wolfgang Schmiedt (born March 11, 1959 in Schlema ) is a German jazz guitarist and music producer.

Live and act

Schmiedt was born the son of a pastor (his brother is the pianist and producer Henning Schmiedt ) and studied guitar from 1981 to 1985 at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin . Then he worked with the group College and with Pascal von Wroblewsky , on whose album Swinging Pool (1986) he can be heard. One focus of his musical work since 1987 has been the Choral-Concert group with Karl Scharnweber and Thomas Klemm , which initially combined hymns with jazz improvisations ; later the concept expanded (jazz version of Mussorgski's Pictures at an Exhibition ). Together with Jörg Huke , he released two albums and started the dance project Princess Troublemaker . Schmiedt (influenced by Bill Frisell ) emerged as a soloist on the album 4 Gitars Solo & Live . As a composer, producer and director, he created media Greater projects such as harbor symphony (which he several times in Warnemünde brought to the performance) light sound Eight or amber Symphony . He also brought the rock opera Tommy to the Rostock Volkstheater . With Dirk Zöllner he forms the Rostock Cowboys.

In 1992 he founded the label KlangRäume , which released more than 70 recordings between jazz, classical music and world music . a. with Mikis Theodorakis , Lauren Newton or John Tchicai . In 1994/1995 he was a visiting professor and headed the popular music department at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in Berlin. In 2004/2005 he was a substitute professor at the Rostock University of Music and Theater , where he built up the Pop / World Music department.

Schmiedt has been playing in Kollektiv N since 2017 , an ensemble in which mainly musicians play who have a connection to Northern Germany. Theo Jörgensmann , Willi Kellers , Heinz-Erich Gödecke and Akira Andō belong to the group .

Prizes and awards

In 1988 Schmiedt received the 2nd prize at the European Jazz Competition at the Leverkusener Jazztage . With the East Berlin Guest Orchestra he was a prizewinner at the international jazz competition in Belgium in 1989. In 2003 he received the Culture Prize from the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for his Björk project.
