Dafnis Prieto (born July 31, 1974 in Santa Clara , Cuba ) is a Cuban jazz musician ( drums , percussion , composition ), band leader and university lecturer living in the United States .

Dafnis Prieto attended the Conservatory in Santa Clara, later the National Music School in Havana and came to New York in 1999, where he has since worked as a sideman and band leader in his own projects. He played in the Caribbean Jazz Project and with Latin musicians such as Michel Camilo , Eddie Palmieri , Chico O'Farrill and Chucho Valdés , as well as with modern creative musicians such as Andrew Hill , Don Byron , Steve Coleman and Henry Threadgill . In 2005 his debut album About the Monks was released ; his third album Taking the Soul for a Walk (2008) he released on his own label Dafnison Music . His sextet includes a. Avishai Cohen , Peter Apfelbaum , Yosvany Terry , Manuel Valera and Yunior Terry. As a composer he wrote music for dance ensembles, film, chamber music and for his own band projects. His work has received awards and grants from Chamber Music America , Jazz at Lincoln Center, and East Carolina University , among others ; In 2011 he received a MacArthur Foundation scholarship . In 2007 his album Absolute Quintet was nominated for a Grammy. Since 2005 he has been teaching music at New York University .
