The New Zealand Historic Places Trust (māori: Pouhere Taonga ) is a Crown Entity responsible for monument protection in New Zealand . It was established by the Historic Places Act 1954 with the intention of promoting the identification, protection and preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of New Zealand. The budget for 2009 was $ 14.410 million New Zealand .

The organization is based in Antrim House on Boulcott Street in Wellington . Regional offices and offices are located in Kerikeri , Auckland , Tauranga , Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin .

The organization is led by a Board of Trustees led by John Acland and a Council for the Heritage of the Māori , led by Tumu te Heuheu , and is under the Ministry for Culture & Heritage . She works with the Department of Conservation and the Department of Affairs of the Māori Te Puni Kōkiri .

The organization publishes the quarterly magazine New Zealand Heritage .

The trust owns historically significant buildings such as the Kerikeri Mission House and the Stone Store .

Register of "Historic Places"

The organization maintains a register of New Zealand Historic Sites, divided into four main categories:

  • Historic Places (architectural monuments)
  • Historic Areas (area monuments)
  • Wahi Tapu (holy places of the Māori)
  • Wahi Tapu Areas (sacred areas of the Māori)

The individual sites are classified into two categories:

  • Category I - sites of particular or outstanding historical or cultural significance
  • Category II - sites of historical or cultural importance

The register currently has almost 7000 entries.

Maori Heritage Council

The Maori Heritage Council is part of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and was established by the Historic Places Act 1993 . Its function is:

  • Protection and registration of wahi tapu and wahi tapu areas (holy places of the Maori and corresponding areas)
  • Supporting the trust to ensure an intercultural perspective in its work
  • Support of the traditional structures of the Māori ( Whanau , Hapū and Iwi ) in the preservation and use of their historical cultural resources
  • Providing advice on recommendations from the Trust regarding archaeological sites
  • Representing the interests of the Trust and Council with regard to the Māori cultural heritage in public and among the Māori.
