The current building opened in 1922 and is the third church to stand on this site. For the first time, reinforced concrete was used as a building material for a neo-Gothic building. The structure consists of reinforced concrete and brick and has a wooden roof supported by concrete arches that are stabilized with steel tie rods.
After the Seddon earthquake in July 2013, which also affected the capital Wellington , the church was initially closed and reopened in April 2017 after construction work that was aimed at earthquake protection and cost NZ $ 9.5 million .
