Criterion Hotel (Oamaru)
The Hotel Criterion is a historic building in the Victorian city center of the New Zealand city of Oamaru in the Otago region . It is located at the intersection of Tyne Street and Harbor Street.
In the 1860s, Oamaru's first agricultural exhibition took place here.
The building was built in 1877 as a hotel for William Gillespie based on designs by architects Forrester & Lemon . It was used as a hotel until it was closed in the course of Prohibition in 1905, after which it was used as a guesthouse after losing its license to serve alcohol, until it was bought by the GT Gillies Ltd. foundry in 1943 . was acquired as a warehouse.
The Criterion was purchased by the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust in 1989 and restored inside and out in 1998 and 1999. In 1998 it was reopened as a hotel. A restaurant and an auction house are located on the ground floor.
On July 2, 1987, the building was classified as a Category 1 Monument (Historic Place Category I) by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust under number 4689 .
