Caribbean Jazz Project

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Caribbean Jazz Project is a Latin jazz band project by Dave Samuels , whose core initially included the jazz musicians Paquito D'Rivera and Andy Narell .

The project first brought together vibraphonist and marimba player Dave Samuels in 1993 for a concert at Central Park Zoo in New York City in 1993; it consisted of Samuels, steel drummer Andy Narell and woodwind player Paquito d'Rivera. Together with other musicians such as the pianist Dario Eskenazi , the bassist Oscar Stagnaro and the drummers Mark Walker or Dafnis Prieto , the project recorded several albums that not only present the music of the Caribbean , but also of the music of South American countries and New York in style influenced by the Dizzy-Gillespie era. The first live album Here and Now was released in 2005 (with other soloists such as trumpeter Diego Urcola and conga player Roberto Quintero).

In 2003 the Caribbean Jazz Project received the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for the album The Gathering , in which flautist Dave Valentin was involved. In addition, it was nominated for a Grammy in the following years for the albums Birds of a Feather , Here and Now: Live in Concert and Afro Bop Alliance , with the last album no longer in a combo , but in a big band format.
