The Central Park Zoo is a zoo in New York City . It is located in Central Park and is administered by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
history
The zoo was founded in 1864, making it the second oldest public zoo in the United States after the Philadelphia Zoo . In 1934 it was expanded with numerous buildings.
The zoo gradually fell into disrepair in the 1980s and was temporarily closed in 1983. In 1988 it was reopened, with the old cages being replaced by enclosures that corresponded to the animals' natural habits.
Animals
The Central Park Zoo is home to animals from tropical and polar regions of the world. Among other things, there is a sea lion enclosure. The zoo is also home to grizzly bears, monkeys and various species of birds. There is a petting zoo for children.
The enclosures are modeled on the natural surroundings of the animals; for example, there is an air-conditioned rainforest house or a cooled penguin house . The zoo also breeds endangered species such as tamarins and the little pandas . Since 2009 it has also been home to snow leopards .
In the media
Central Park Zoo is a location in the Madagascar animated film series as well as in the animated series The Penguins from Madagascar . Also in the films Wild animal! and Mr. Popper's penguins it serves as a backdrop.
In the early 1970s, the gorilla lady Pattycake became famous and extremely popular with the citizens of New York. She later lived in the Bronx Zoo , also in New York.
In the 1990s, the male polar bear Gus became the zoo's mascot. The media took a lot of part in his life, especially because of his mental health problems. He had to be euthanized in 2013 because of an incurable brain tumor.
In Woody Allen's film A Rainy Day in New York , the space in front of the Delacorte Clock in the Central Park Zoo is a central motif and represents the setting for the final scene.
