Antonio Sánchez (* 1. November 1971 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican jazz - drummer , who now lives in the US. He belongs to the new generation of musicians from Latin America who have established themselves in the New York jazz scene .

Live and act

Initially, Sánchez played with the pianist Danilo Pérez and, in his trio, continued to develop Latin American jazz , for example by developing the clave in 10/4 or 7/4 time. This development began at the end of the 1990s and was continued through collaboration with musicians such as David Sánchez (CD Melaza ) or Sebastian Schunke (CD Symbiosis ).

Finally, Pat Metheny discovered the drummer Sánchez at a joint concert and accepted him into his trio and the Pat Metheny Group. He also toured with Chick Corea , Michael Brecker , Joe Lovano , Charlie Haden and Matija Dedić . In 2007 he released his first album as a band leader, Migration ; New Life (Cam Jazz) followed in 2013 , with David Binney and Donny McCaslin . He has also performed at international festivals such as the Modern Drummer Festival Weekend or the Montreal Drum Festival . Since 2006 he has been teaching at New York University . For his albums New Life and The Unity Sessions he received the Echo Jazz in 2014 and 2017 .

In 2014 he composed the score for the film Birdman or (The unexpected power of cluelessness) and received the Grammy in 2016 for “Best Composed Soundtrack for Visual Media” (Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media) .

Sanchez is married to the singer Thana Alexa .
