Diego Piñera (* 1981 in Montevideo ) is a German-Uruguayan jazz musician ( drums , composition ).

Live and act

Piñera, who comes from a family of musicians, grew up in his hometown, where he was continuously tutored on drums by Osvaldo Fattoruso from the age of five . At the age of 18 he went to Cuba, where he studied at the Havana School of Music and Art . Then he continued his percussion studies at Berklee College of Music and in 2003 moved to the University of Music and Theater in Leipzig . His teachers include Danilo Pérez , Bob Moses , Changuito and Kenwood Dennard .

With his trio he recorded his debut album Buscando in 2005 in Montevideo . He has been traveling with his quartet since 2011. Since then he has also played in Sebastian Schunke's band , whose approach of writing compositions for special performers he largely shares. He is also particularly interested in "crooked bars" and " polyrhythmic matters, harmoniously complex construction sites." As a sideman, he played with musicians such as Jerry Bergonzi , Danilo Pérez, Hans Glawischnig , Dan Tepfer , Alex Sipiagin , Miguel Zenón , Wilson de Oliveira , Nené Vásquez , Joe Gallardo , Nils Wogram , Leon Gurvitch and Paul Brody . He was also involved in recordings by José Reinoso ( Tango Jam ), André Mingas ( E Luanda ), Daniel Stawinski Clave Azul ( Looking Inward ) and Katja Riemann ( Die Vögel ).

Piñera is also an endorser for various musical instrument manufacturers.

Prizes and awards

Piñera won first prize at the Berklee Generation 2002 . With the formation "Clave Azul" under the direction of the pianist Daniel Stawinski he won the Latin Prize of the Berlin Jazz & Blues Award 2005. In 2011 he was awarded the Leipzig Jazz Young Talent Prize. He was honored with an Echo Jazz in 2017 for his album My Picture .
