Although autodidact , he became a professional musician at the age of eight with the Havana Jazz Band under the direction of Tomás González. He stayed with the group for 22 years, with whom he recorded many albums. He also made recordings with Cal Tjader , Hilario Durán , Flora Purim and Airto Moreira ; He was also involved in the album Lágrimas negras by Bebo Valdés and Diego el Cigala , which received a Grammy in 2004.

Changuito taught many percussionists at the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba such as Giovanni Hidalgo , Karl Perazzo (Santana) and Diego Piñera . He also gave courses at the Universidad de Puerto Rico and the Berklee College of Music .
