Juan Formal
Juan Clímaco Formell Cortina (born August 2, 1942 in Havana ; † May 1, 2014 there ) was a Cuban musician . He was the band leader and bassist of salsa and closely related styles such as timba .
In 1957 he began to make music, from November 1959 he was bassist with the Banda de Música de la Policía Revolucionaria . In the 1960s he became a member of the Orquesta Revé Elio Revés and founded the well-known Cuban band Los Van Van in 1969 . In this band he used electric instruments such as electric guitar , electric bass and keyboard for the first time in Cuba .
In March 2010, Formell was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Instituto Superior de Arte . In 2013 he received the Latin Grammy for his life's work.
