The variety is approved in the metropolitan city of Bologna and the provinces of Mantua , Modena and Reggio nell'Emilia . The grapes used for the DOC wine Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce are only harvested in 11 communities near Modena .

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:
- The shoot tip is open. It is very hairy, whitish and has a carmine tinge. The green young leaves are hairy like a cobweb and spotted bronze (anthocyanin spots).
- The medium-sized, almost pentagonal leaves (see also the article leaf shape ) are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is open in a V-shape. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is hardly blistered. The leaves turn reddish in autumn.
- The mostly conical to cylindrical grape is usually shouldered, small to medium-sized and dense berries. The round berries are medium-sized and bluish-black in color. The peel of the berry is firm.
