Hilario Durán Luis Torres (* 1953 in Havana ) one is off Cuba originating, Canadian musician ( piano , keyboard ), arranger , composer and band leader of Latin Jazz .

biography

At the beginning of his career, Hilario Durán was heavily influenced by the Cuban music of Ernesto Lecuona , Frank Emilio Flynn and Peruchin . He studied and graduated from the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory in Havana, where he met Chucho Valdés , Paquito D'Rivera and Gonzalo Rubalcaba . With his first band called Los D'Siempre he turned away from traditional Cuban music and played jazz.

He began his professional career as a member of the trumpeter Arturo Sandoval's band , who belonged from 1981 to 1990. On numerous tours, he also worked with Dizzy Gillespies United Nations Orchestra and Michel Legrand . In 1990 he founded his own formation Perspectiva , with which he toured Latin America and Europe. In 1991 he worked with Jane Bunnett ( Spirits of Havana ). In 1995 he broke up his band after a European tour and devoted himself to solo projects; His album Francisco's Song was created in 1996, followed by Killer Tumbao (1997), in which he played with Cuban musicians such as Tata Güines and Changuito.

Durán moved to Canada in the late 1990s and is a member of the jazz department at Humber College in Toronto , where he teaches piano and ensemble playing. Since then he has also worked on various projects, for example at the Modern Drummer Festival with Horacio "El Negro" Hernández , John Patitucci and Michael Brecker. In 2001 he performed at the Barranquilla Jazz Festival in Colombia , a. a. in a band with Dave Valentin , Juan Pablo Torres , John Benitez and "Patato" Valdés . In 2002 he worked as a pianist and composer with Paquito D 'Rivera, Regina Carter and the Brazilian singer Leny Andrade , with whom he performed in the World Festival Orchestra at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center . In 2005 he put together a big band with Cuban and Canadian musicians , which performed at several Toronto jazz festivals. In 2006 he worked on the album Loose by singer Nelly Furtado .

As a composer, Durán worked with the classical ensembles Gryphon Trio and the Quartetto Gelato in the 2000s . During this time he also played with the Russian Globalis Symphony Orchestra, with which he played arrangements by Roberto Occhipinti. In 2003 he was first nominated for the Juno Award ; In 2005 he won the award for his album New Danzon .
