Sabanalarga (Spanish for wide plain ) is a municipality ( municipio ) in Colombia in the Atlántico department .
geography
Sabanalarga is 41 km south of Barranquilla near the Colombian Caribbean coast. Part of the El Guájaro reservoir is located in the municipality . Sabanalarga borders Usiacurí , Baranoa and Polonuevo to the north, Ponedera to the east, Candelaria and Manatí to the south, Repelón to the southwest and Luruaco and Piojó to the west .

The municipality of Sabanalarga has 102,334 inhabitants, of which 84,828 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
The history of Sabanalarga goes back to the 16th century, when the area of today's municipality was settled by isolated groups. From 1719 there was a first church. The official establishment took place in 1744 by the viceroy Sebastián de Eslava y Lazaga arranged at the current location. Sabanalarga received the status of a villa in 1833 and thus became the capital of the fourth canton of the province of Cartagena. In 1860 Sabanalarga became the capital of the newly created province of Sabanalarga. This was merged with Barranquilla in 1905 to form the new Departamento Atlántico.
economy
The main industries of Sabanalarga are agriculture , cattle production and trade . In particular, sugar cane , cotton , corn and bananas are grown. The most important cattle exhibition in the region takes place once a year.
Sports
Uniautónoma FC , a former professional football club of the Universidad Autónoma del Caribe, was based in Sabanalarga from 2010 to 2013 . The club played its home games in the second division at the Estadio Marcos Henríquez , which has a capacity of around 8,000 seats. After promotion to the first division , the stadium was too small and the club moved to Barranquilla. After relegated to the second division in 2015, the club was dissolved and the right to start was sold.
