Luruaco is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Atlántico in Colombia .

geography

Luruaco is located in the Sur sub-region in Atlántico at an altitude of 31 m above sea level. NN , 67 km from Barranquilla and has an average annual temperature of 28 ° C. In the field of community Luruaco the lagoon find Luruaco , the reservoir Guájaro and the wetland San Juan de Tocagua . The municipality borders Piojó to the north, Sabanalarga to the east, Repelón to the south and Santa Catalina in the Bolívar department to the west .

history

Luruaco goes back to an indigenous village of Uruaco . The site was discovered for the Spaniards in 1553. Luruaco has had parish status since 1960. In the meantime the name was changed to Urdaneta Arbeláez after a conservative politician , but changed back after a while at the request of the residents.

economy

Luruaco's main industries are logging , agriculture , cattle production and fishing . In particular, sugar cane , corn , rice and cassava are grown .

gastronomy

Luruaco is known for the Arepa de Huevo , a deep-fried corn pancake filled with eggs, which is particularly appreciated by travelers passing through. Once a year the Festival de la Arepa de Huevo is celebrated in Luruaco .
