Soledad is a Colombian municipality (Municipio) on the Río Magdalena in the Department of Atlántico . Soledad connects directly to the south of Barranquilla and is part of the metropolitan region of Barranquilla .

Soledad is 30 km upstream from the mouth of the Magdalena River into the Caribbean Sea . It borders in the north with Barranquilla , with the Don Juan brook forming the border, in the south with Malambo , in the east with Sitionuevo in the Magdalena department , from which it is separated by the Río Magdalena, and in the west with Galapa .

The municipality of Soledad has 683,580 inhabitants, of which 683,001 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality. Soledad is the municipality with the strongest population growth in Colombia, in 2005 the population was only 461,603. 2,123,081 people live in the metropolitan region (as of 2019).

history

Soledad's history dates back to 1598 when Antonio Moreno Estupiñán set up an indigenous settlement there, known as La Porquera de San Antonio . In 1743 the first parish was founded. The place received the status of a villa in 1813 as Soledad de Colombia . In 1824 Soledad became the seat of the third canton in what was then the province of Cartagena.

Soledad prides itself on being the place where the sick Simón Bolívar stayed for a month in 1830 . In one of the Colombian civil wars of the 19th century, Soledad became the site of a battle between liberals and conservatives in 1859.

A large number of industries are located in Soledad, particularly pharmaceutical and power generation industries. Barranquilla Airport is one of the most important economic factors in the municipality .
