The Barranquilla Airport ( Spanish Aeropuerto Internacional Ernesto Cortissoz , IATA code : BAQ , ICAO code : SKBQ ) is an international traffic airport in the municipality of Soledad , south of the Colombian coastal city of Barranquilla , Atlántico Department . history
Barranquilla Airport is named after Ernesto Cortissoz , a visionary and Sephardic Jew who was born in Barranquilla in 1884. On December 5, 1919, he founded the company SCADTA - Sociedad Colombo-Alemana de Transportes Aéreos ("German-Colombian Air Transport Company ") - with three partners from Germany and five from Colombia. The SCADTA started with a capital of 100 Pesos gold and two Junkers F 13 seaplanes, left over from the First World War .
The airport is designed for the Boeing 747 , Boeing 767 and Airbus A340 models and is mainly used for domestic American air traffic.

Incidents
- On April 26, 1989, a Sud Aviation Caravelle 11R of Aerosucre (HK-3325X) crashed . The machine crashed into an inhabited area shortly after taking off in Barranquilla , Colombia . All five occupants (three crew, two passengers) and two people were killed on the ground. The cause was the poorly secured cargo slipping during take-off, which shifted the aircraft's center of gravity to such an extent that it stalled (see also the Aerosucre accident at Barranquilla 1989 ) .
