Lovren has been under contract with Zenit St. Petersburg since the end of July 2020 .

childhood

Dejan was three years old, fled Lovrens Croatian family in front of the Bosnian war from Kraljeva Sutjeska , a village near Zenica, and settled in Munich down. He speaks fluent German . After the visa was not extended, Lovren went to Croatia with his family and lived in central Croatian Karlovac . Both privately and at school he struggled with adjustment difficulties because he did not speak Croatian well . His brother Davor , who was born in Munich, is also a professional soccer player.

Career

In the club

Lovren began playing soccer in Munich at BSC Sendling . After moving to Croatia he played for NK Ilovac and for NK Karlovac . In 2006 he got a professional contract with the Croatian record champions Dinamo Zagreb ; previously he had played in the club's youth teams. As was customary at Dinamo Zagreb, he was immediately loaned to the Croatian first division club NK Inter Zaprešić until summer 2008. From 2008 he played at Dinamo as a regular player in central defense alongside Robert Kovač . In January 2010 he was signed by the French series champion Olympique Lyon and received a contract there until 2015. At first he played as a right-back in the back four. From summer 2010 he was set up as a regular player in central defense alongside team captain Cris .

For the 2013/14 season Lovren moved to the Premier League for Southampton FC and signed a four-year contract. He completed 31 league games in his first season.

For the 2014/15 season , he moved to Liverpool for a transfer fee of £ 20 million, following Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana , who had also moved from Southampton to Liverpool. With the transfer fee, Lovren became the most expensive defender in the history of the Liverpool club until then, before he was replaced by Virgil van Dijk in the winter transfer period of the 2017/18 season . On February 26, 2015, Liverpool FC were eliminated from the round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League on penalties against Besiktas Istanbul , with Lovren missing his penalty. The Daily Telegraph listed Lovren as one of the Premier League's top 20 worst engagements in the 2014-15 season. On April 15, 2016, Lovren scored the 4-3 winning goal in stoppage time in the quarter-final second leg of the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League against Borussia Dortmund and thus contributed to the semi-finals of Liverpool, who have been coached by Jürgen Klopp since autumn 2015 . After the signing of Virgil van Dijk, Lovren formed the central defense of Liverpool FC with the Dutch international. On January 14, 2018, he wore the captain's armband for the first time in the 4-3 win over Manchester City . With Liverpool FC he won the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League and the 2020 English championship . His contract ran until 2021.

At the end of July 2020 he moved to Zenit St. Petersburg ; his contract runs for three years.

National team

In 2009, Lovren made his debut for the Croatian senior team in the friendly against Qatar . Dejan Lovren has been a regular since the resignation of Robert Kovač . For the European Football Championship in 2012 , he fell out due to an ankle injury. Lovren played all three group matches of the Croatian national team at the 2014 World Cup when they failed to qualify for the round of 16. He was not nominated for Euro 2016 due to disagreements with coach Ante Čačić .

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia he was back in the Croatian squad and was on the pitch in all seven games for the entire season when Croatia lost 4-2 in the final to France.
