Game system
In the first division, 10 teams are currently playing against each other in two rounds. At the end of the season, the last team is relegated directly, while the penultimate team has to go into relegation.
After 12 clubs have belonged to the league since 2002, a league with 16 teams was once again implemented in 2009 after long discussions within the association and many disagreements for the 2009/10 season. This was justified with the many departures in the previous years. One is firmly convinced that "middle" class players would no longer switch to second division teams abroad and would therefore disappear from the scene if there were more clubs within the league that could use such players. The main supporter of this league was the former Croatian national player and current league president Igor Štimac . Because the licensing conditions have been aligned with those of UEFA in recent years - and thus tightened - more and more clubs in the first division do not have a stadium that is eligible for a license. In order to still get the license, they had to fall back on stadiums nearby, e.g. B. the new first division club from Karlovac plays its home games in Zaprešić, NK Istra plays in Rijeka, Lokomotiva Zagreb in the stadium of Dinamo Zagreb and Medjimurje in Varaždin.
After the 2011/12 season, however, this controversial regulation was abolished, so that then again 12 teams participated per season. Since the 2013/2014 season, the league has been reduced to 10 teams.

Annotation:
In the 1995/96 season there were two seasons of the first division: League 1.A (with 12 clubs) and 1.B (with 10 teams).
After the round trip, the five best teams of the 1st A season and the first team of the 1st B season played for the champions.
The remaining seven 1.A clubs and the runner-up from 1.B played to remain in the 1.A season, to which the third and fourth place winners of season 1.B qualified.
The remaining eight teams from 1.B fought for non-relegation to the second division , although this was not necessary because the season 1.B was expanded in the following season 1996/97 .
This constellation of the league results in different seasons of the individual clubs in the table above.
