The Primera Divisió is the top football league in Andorra . It was founded in 1995 and is administered by the Andorran Football Association. Eight teams are currently playing for the championship in the league.
history
The mode of competition and the number of participating teams have been changed several times. In the first year, the 1995/96 season, ten teams played against each other, the leaders after the last match day were champions. The competition was continued in the same mode, but in the following season with twelve teams, then with eleven clubs. After the 1998/99 season, four of the twelve teams relegated to reduce the number of first division clubs to eight and create a second division.
After CE Benito had withdrawn from the game operation during the winter break of the 1999/2000 season, the season was played with seven clubs to the end and the club's games were removed from the rating. At the end of the season there was the scandal about the master Constelació Esportiva , which resulted in the forced relegation. The sporting relegated Sporting Club d'Escaldes was allowed to continue to play first class and the league was replenished to eight clubs. In the following season, today's mode, described below, was introduced.
mode
First of all, each team plays twice against each other team. After the preliminary round, the league is divided: the first four clubs play for the championship, while the last four teams play against relegation. To determine the master and the relegated team, the teams within the two groups play against each other twice again. This means that each club has 20 championship games over the course of a season.
The Andorran champions qualify for the first round of the Champions League qualification , while the second and third placed take part in the second and first round of the Europa League qualification .
particularities
Due to the lack of space in the small Pyrenees state of Andorra, all of the clubs' season games used to take place in the Camp d'Esports d'Aixovall or in the Estadi Comunal d'Andorra la Vella in Andorra la Vella . Thus, the individual game days were scattered over the weekends, as only one game could take place at a time. Today all games are played on the same day of the week.
