The Rijeka Airport ( kroat. : Zračna luka Rijeka ) is the international airport of Rijeka in Croatia . Its runway is 2500 m long and 45 m wide.

Location and transport links

Rijeka Airport is located on the Croatian island of Krk , 16 km southeast of Rijeka .

The airport is Rijeka by car on the European route E65 , which also Magistrale called National Road 8 and then along the national road 102, the Krk bridge to achieve crossing. Furthermore, an Autotrolej shuttle bus drives to Rijeka immediately after the arrival of every scheduled flight. The bus also runs from the center to the airport, depending on the departure times.

Airlines and Destinations

Since Hapag-Lloyd Express and later TUIfly opened the first line connections , the number of passengers had risen continuously in the first few years. The airport is currently connected to 23 cities in Europe and Tel Aviv . The connections in the German-speaking region include Condor with Frankfurt am Main and Eurowings with Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne / Bonn and Stuttgart. Croatia Airlines and Lufthansa connect Rijeka with Munich . Ryanair has been flying to Frankfurt am Main in Germany and Stockholm since 2018. Trade Air serves the national destinations Split , Dubrovnik and Osijek .

In 2006 the number of passengers was around 210,000.

Transhipment point for arms deliveries to the Middle East

The Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) published an article in October 2017 according to which Rijeka Airport has become an important transshipment point for weapons, ammunition and other weapons technology in the current year. According to this, mainly old arsenals from the former countries of the Soviet Union are brought to Rijeka with flights operated by the Pentagon and then flown on to Qatar to the Al Udeid Air Base .

Incidents

  • On May 23, 1971, a Tupolev Tu-134A ( aircraft registration YU-AHZ ) of Aviogenex had an accident while approaching Rijeka airport on the island of Krk . During the hard landing, probably caused by an optical illusion due to heavy rain, the right wing broke off. The machine lay on its back and caught fire, killing 78 people. Only five people were able to leave the machine alive. Among the victims was the well-known Croatian poet Josip Pupačić with his wife and daughter (see also Aviogenex flight 130 ) .
