Turopolje Museum in Velika Gorica |
Velika Gorica ( [ˈʋɛlika ˈɡɔritsa] ) is the largest and most populous city in the Zagreb County south of the Croatian capital Zagreb . It is the informal capital of the Turopolje region . In Old Slavonic Turopolje means "bull field" or "field of bulls".
Velika Gorica has 63,517 inhabitants and is often referred to as the suburb of Zagreb. To the north, the city borders on Zagreb, to the south of it are the municipalities of Kravarsko and Pokupsko . The city is home to the Radnik (" Workers ") football club, some of which belonged to the Croatian first football league.
The city's coat of arms is represented by a knight's shield on which a silver bull (Old Slavic: tur , Croatian: bik ) holds a meetinghouse with a red roof. In the upper left corner there are three hexagonal stars and a silver crescent moon in the upper right corner.
history
The city is first mentioned in 1228 as the site of a church . However, during excavations, traces of a hunter-gatherer culture from the Stone Age as well as a very early agriculturally organized group have been found, which is probably due to the fertility of the area.
traffic
Velika Gorica is located at the intersection of the national roads D 30 ( Zagreb - Petrinja / Sisak ) and D 31 (to Glina in Banovina ). The A11 motorway is also under construction , which essentially follows the route of the D 30 and is intended to relieve the cities and villages along the road. It also functions as a western bypass for Velika Gorica. The city has two interchanges - Velika Gorica-sjever and Velika Gorica-jug as well as a train station on the Zagreb – Sisak line , which is outside the city center.
In Velika Gorica there is next to the international airport Zagreb (in Pleso ) also a sport airfield ( Buševec ).
