Banovina (region)

The Banovina roughly covers today's area of the Sisak-Moslavina County

The Banovina or Banija , formerly also called Banska krajina , is a sparsely populated area in central Croatia between the middle and lower Kupa in the north and the lower Una in the southeast. All three names go back to the old nobility title Ban .

The historical region borders the Turopolje region in the north, the Kordun region in the west and the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the south . The main town of the region is Petrinja . The Banovina is now entirely in the Sisak-Moslavina County . The Petrova gora mountain range forms the border to the Kordun in the west and at the same time has a formative character for the entire region.

The ethnic composition of the population of this area changed fundamentally in the course of history in view of the frequent armed conflicts which the region had to endure. The events of the Turkish Wars , the Second World War and the Croatian War had a formative influence on the region .
