Otto Urstadt

Kaspar Otto Urstadt (born August 30, 1868 in Alsfeld ; † July 2, 1945 in Gießen ) was a liberal Hessian politician ( Progress , DDP ) and former state minister for education, member of the 2nd Chamber of the Land estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse and the Landtag of the People's State of Hesse in the Weimar Republic .

Life

Otto Urstadt was the son of the beer brewer Ernst Urbach and his wife Katharine, nee Steueragel. He was a Protestant and married to his wife Marie, née Diehm.

Otto Urstadt studied philosophy in Giessen and Berlin and attended the teachers' seminar in Friedberg . From 1899 he worked as a teacher at the grammar school in Giessen.

politics

Otto Urstadt was a member of the Progressive People's Party and was elected to the city council in Gießen in 1911 and (for the constituency Oberhessen 16 / Gießen II ) in the Hessian state parliament. After the November Revolution he was re-elected to the state parliament (now for the German Democratic Party) from 1919 to September 20, 1927. His successor in the state parliament was Karoline Balser .

In 1919 he became Minister of Education in Ulrich I's cabinet (the official title was: Director of the Ministerial Department for Education). On February 21, 1919, he handed over this position to Reinhard Strecker and was again a senior teacher in Giessen. On October 1, 1921, however, he was reappointed to the Hessian state government as education minister. From April 1, 1922, Carl Ulrich himself took over the education department and Otto Urstadt was Ministerial Director of the Hessian State Office for Education until his retirement in 1932.
