Karoline Balser

Karoline Balser née Schmierer (born July 7, 1873 in Goddelau ; † March 23, 1928 in Darmstadt ) was a liberal politician ( DDP ), member of the state parliament of the State of Hesse and women's rights activist .

Karoline (called Lina) Balser was the daughter of the accountant Gottlieb Schmierer and his wife Berta nee Ebel. She was married to Gustav Balser, the State Councilor in the Hessian Ministry of Finance .

Karoline Balser was a city councilor in Darmstadt and from 1919 to 1927 she was a member of the state parliament of the DDP parliamentary group for four electoral terms. As one of only 12 women in the state parliament, she campaigned for women's rights.

Even as a housewife, she demanded the education of girls and women, the admission of women to higher judicial and civil servant positions and in the police force. She was committed to the use of female teachers in managerial positions as well as female teachers in boys' schools.

In Darmstadt-Arheilgen the Karoline-Balser-Weg is named after her.
