Robert Kovač [ ˈrɔbɛrt ˈkɔʋaːtʃ ] (born April 6, 1974 in West Berlin ) is a former German-Croatian soccer player and current coach . He spent most of his career in Germany, played 84 games for the Croatian national team and has been an assistant coach under his older brother Niko since 2013 . After stints with the Croatian national team , Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Bayern Munich , they have been coaching AS Monaco since 2020 .

Robert Kovač grew up as the son of Croatian parents (from Livno , SR Bosnia-Herzegovina ) with brother Niko in Berlin and began playing club football at Rapide Wedding . This was followed by seven years for Hertha Zehlendorf , initially in 1988/89 in the B-youth and at the latest from 1991 in the Berlin season of the third-class amateur league . In the Oberliga Nordost established after the turnaround in the NOFV area , the Zehlendorfer managed with the defender 1993/94 to qualify for the regional league , which was re-established as the 3rd division in the following season .

For the 1995/96 season he received a licensed player contract with the second division club 1. FC Nürnberg , for which he played 33 games in his first season and scored one goal. He played his first game on August 9, 1995 (2nd matchday) in a 0-0 draw at home against VfL Wolfsburg ; He scored his first goal on April 6, 1996 (24th matchday) to compensate for the 2-1 home defeat against 1. FSV Mainz 05 . In the relegation season of Nuremberg, Kovač was one of the few conspicuous players, so he moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the summer of 1996 . There he came on 13 missions in his first Bundesliga season. In the following season 1997/98 he became a regular player in the defense. Kovač played for Bayer until 2001 , when he scored his only Bundesliga goal in the penultimate season on March 4, 2000 (23rd matchday) with the goal to win 3-1 at 1. FC Kaiserslautern .

From 2001 to 2005 he played 94 league games for FC Bayern Munich . In four seasons he won the DFB Cup twice, was German champion twice , won the League Cup and the World Cup .

For the 2005/06 season Kovač moved on a free transfer to the Italian first division club Juventus Turin , for whom he was regularly used, but with Fabio Cannavaro and Lilian Thuram had strong competition in his position in central defense . When the club in the summer of 2006 as a result of the manipulation of the scandal in the Serie B forced descent and many players left the club decided Kovač to stay and was Didier Deschamps in the first round key players in defense. After the winter break he was only used once due to a protracted foot injury; nevertheless he had his share in the direct resurgence of Juventus.

For the 2007/08 season Kovač returned to the Bundesliga and signed with Borussia Dortmund . Due to the termination of the contract at Juventus, there was no transfer fee. With Borussia Dortmund he reached the final of the DFB-Pokal on April 19, 2008 , which however was lost 2-1 in extra time against Bayern Munich. On January 29, 2009 he moved to Dinamo Zagreb, where he became captain and head of defense and won two titles at the end of the season.

On June 2, 2010, Kovač ended his active career.

National team

For the senior national team of Croatia he played alongside his brother for a long time and after his departure he took over the office of team captain. Kovač played 84 international matches without a goal of his own and took part with Croatia in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and in the 2004 and 2008 European Championships, playing 11 of 13 matches at these tournaments.

Coaching career

In January 2013 Robert Kovač was introduced as assistant coach of the Croatian U-21 national team. Head coach was also his brother Niko .

On October 16, 2013 he was appointed assistant coach of the senior national team and assisted his brother and head coach Niko until his dismissal on September 9, 2015.

From March 8, 2016 until the end of the 2017/18 season, he assisted his brother as assistant coach for the German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt .

From July 2018 to November 2019 Robert Kovač was assistant coach under his brother Niko at FC Bayern Munich . He received a contract running until June 30, 2021, which was terminated prematurely on November 3, 2019, along with the separation of FC Bayern from his brother Niko. For the 2020/21 season , Kovač was assistant coach of the French first division club AS Monaco at the side of his brother .

Private

He was born in his second marriage to Anica Kovač. Martinović, Miss Croatia 1995 , married and has three children with her. His brother Niko was also a professional soccer player. They played together for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and the Croatian national team and have been a joint coaching team since 2013.
