Insel Air ( spelling InselAir ) was an airline based in Willemstad in Curaçao and based at Curaçao Airport . It ceased flight operations in February 2019.
history
Insel Air was a private initiative of various business and financial institutions that were of the opinion that the (then) Netherlands Antilles needed its own airline for regional flights at reasonable prices. It was finally founded in 1993, but flight operations only began in August 2006 with an Embraer 110-P1 Bandeirante with daily flights from Curaçao to the neighboring island of Aruba . This was followed by flights to the other neighboring island of Bonaire . Since January 2007 Insel Air has been connecting the northern and eastern islands via Sint Maarten .
An investigation carried out in January 2017 by the Transport Safety Authority of the Kingdom of the Netherlands ( Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport ) revealed deficiencies at both Insel Air and its subsidiary Insel Air Aruba and the aviation authorities of Curaçao and Aruba. As a result, a number of aircraft from both companies are no longer allowed to take off for an indefinite period. Insel Air then reduced its flight destinations, which previously also included flight destinations in the USA and South America, to the ABC islands and Sint Maarten and laid off 250 of the original 550 employees. The codeshare agreement with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has been terminated by KLM. A deferred payment, which initially applied until June 9, 2017 and was legally extended until August 2018, gives the company time to reposition itself.
fleet
As of December 2018, Insel Air's fleet consisted of four aircraft. In February 2019 only one Fokker 50 was still operational.
