Palmar de Varela is located 23 km south of Barranquilla in the delta of the Río Magdalena near the Colombian Caribbean coast at an altitude of 10  m above sea level. NN . The annual average temperature is 28 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on Santo Tomás , in the south on Ponedera , in the east on the Río Magdalena and the communities Sitionuevo and Remolino in the Departamento del Magdalena and in the west on Santo Tomás and Ponedera.

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the region was inhabited by indigenous peoples . The area of ​​today's Palmar de Varela was explored in 1533 by Pedro de Heredia for the Spaniards. A predecessor place during the colonial times was called Juncalejo . Palmar de Varela itself was probably founded by Catalino Varela in the 1770s. In 1856 Palmar de Varela became a municipality.
