Jens Wilken Hornemann (born March 6, 1770 in Marstal , † July 30, 1841 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish botanist who edited the Flora Danica after the death of Martin Vahl . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Hornem. "

Life

Hornemann was from 1801 lecturer at the Botanical Garden of the University of Copenhagen. After the death of Martin Vahl , he took over the further edition of the Flora Danica with the fascicles 22 to 39, which until 1840 comprised the number of 1080 panels (and thus plant descriptions). From 1808 he held the professorship for botany, from 1817 he was also director of the Botanical Garden in Copenhagen.

Honors

The genus Hornemannia was named in his honor by Willdenow , but is synonymous with Mazus and Lindernia . He is also remembered in specific epithets such as Carduelis hornemanni or Epilobium hornemannii . The mushroom Stropharia hornemannii was named after him in 1934. In 1813 Hornemann became a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences , in 1815 a corresponding member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences , and in 1816 he was appointed a foreign member. In 1815 he was made a knight of the Order of Dannebrog . In 1818 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Hans Christian Andersen , who frequently visited Hornemann in Copenhagen, took him as a model for the botany professor, who knows how to interpret the behavior of the plants in little Ida's flowers .
