Martin Vahl

Martin Vahl (born October 10, 1749 in Bergen , † December 24, 1804 in Copenhagen ) was a Norwegian-Danish botanist and student of Linnaeus . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Vahl ".

Live and act

Vahl studied medicine and botany in Bergen , Copenhagen and Uppsala from 1766 to 1774 . There he met the natural scientist Carl von Linné (1707–1778). From 1779 to 1782 he lectured in the Copenhagen Botanical Garden . In 1786 he became a professor at the Society for Natural History in Copenhagen. In 1792 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . He was an employee of the Flora Danica panel factory . Between 1801 and 1804 he held the chair of botany at the University of Copenhagen .

Honors

The plant genus Vahlia Thunb. (temporarily added to the genus Bistella ) from the family Vahliaceae in the subclass of the aster-like (Asteridae) has been named after him.
