Songo (music)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Songo is a Cuban style of music that was developed by Changuito , percussionist in the Los Van Van group . It is characterized by the use of various percussion instruments such as timbales , cowbells , wooden blocks , electronic drums and cymbals as well as the striking technique with the hands. Los Van Van's first album, along with the Nueva Trova, shaped the music of Cuba in the 1970s.

Los Van Van mixed Charanga style flutes and violins with rock, jazz and Brazilian music. They also brought in the electric guitar and bass, as well as the drums. The new dance music was named "Songo". Los Van Van has remained a changing organism to this day, so the synthesizer as well as new styles or new formations found their way into the band without the quality of their music suffered.
