Dan Tepfer
Dan Tepfer (born January 8, 1982 in Paris ) is an American jazz pianist , composer and music teacher .
Live and act
Tepfer started classical piano training at the Paris Conservatoire Paul Dukas at the age of six . During his college years he worked autodidact with jazz - improvisation . After earning a bachelor's degree in astrophysics from the University of Edinburgh and studying at the New England Conservatory in Boston with Danilo Pérez , he graduated with honors in 2005. He then moved to New York City , where he has worked as a pianist, composer and music teacher ever since.
In 2005 his debut album Before the Storm was released . Tepfer has worked with musicians such as Jeff Ballard , Chris Cheek , Lee Konitz , Steve Lacy , Bob Brookmeyer , Charles McPherson , Sam Leak , Holger Scheidt , Ben Wendel ( Small Constructions 2013) and Camille Bertault . He also caused a stir with his recording of the Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach , in which he did not settle for the classical role as an interpreter, but instead expanded the Bach Variations with his own variations (improvisations).
Tepfer has taught at various universities and conservatories such as the Royal Academy of Music (London), the Seoul Institute of the Arts , the Chopin Conservatory (Warsaw), the Swiss Jazz School (Bern) and the SMU Meadows School of the Arts (Dallas ).
Awards
Among other things, Tepfer received the first prize and the audience award at the Montreux Jazz Festival 2006 in the Solo Piano Competition , in the same year the first prize at the East Coast Jazz Festival Competition . In 2007 he also won first prize in the American Pianists Association competition , which led him to a Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz from 2007-2009 . His album Oxygen was voted one of the ten best albums of the year by Cadence Magazine in 2005 .
