Daniel Manrique-Smith
Daniel Manrique-Smith (* 1982 in Lima ) is a Peruvian fusion musician ( flutes ).
Act
Manrique-Smith received flute lessons as a child and adolescent, but had played mostly Latin American music at the time. He continued his education at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música . At the age of almost 20 he came to Germany to study classical and jazz flute at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and at the Cologne University of Music and Dance . As an instrumentalist he is influenced by his teacher Michael Heupel as well as by Jorge Pardo and Orlando Valle .
In 2013, he founded his band Jin Jim with guitarist Johann May, bassist Ben Tai Trawinski and drummer Nico Stallmann , which released their debut album The Arrival in 2014 ; In 2018 the album White Shadows followed at ACT . He also worked with Paulo Álvares , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Djalma Corrêa , Claudio Puntin , Lalo Schifrin , Michael Sagmeister , Manfred Schoof and John Tilbury .
Manrique-Smith has toured South America, Europe and Africa; he has performed at international festivals such as JazzBaltica , the Schaffhausen Jazz Festival and the Viersen Jazz Festival . He can also be heard on the album Despertando by Diego Piñera and on the album Espacios abiertos by the world music group Pangea Ultima .
Prizes and awards
Manrique-Smith has already won several prizes as a soloist in Peru. In 2014 he and his band Jin Jim won the Leverkusener Jazztage competition .
