Djalma Corrêa

Djalma Corrêa (born November 18, 1942 in Ouro Preto ) is a Brazilian percussionist and composer who has appeared in both the Música Popular Brasileira and jazz .

Corrêa comes from a musical family and grew up in Minas Gerais until she was twelve . He studied percussion and composition at the Universidade Federal da Bahia with Walter Smetak , Hans Joachim Koellreutter , Ernst Widmer and others. In the 1960s he accompanied Gilberto Gil , Caetano Veloso , Maria Bethânia , Gal Costa , Tom Zé , Alcyvando Luz , Fernando Lona and Antonio Perna Fróes , with whom he also performed his own works; he was also a drummer in the orchestra of Carlos Lacerda . In the early 1970s he formed the Grupo Baiafro in Salvador da Bahia with Edson Ernetério de Sant'Ana and Onias Camardelli , which worked with the New Dave Pike Set in 1972 and also released its own album in 1978. In the same year he performed with Gilberto Gil at the Montreux Jazz Festival . He later worked with Sebastião Tapajós , founded the Quarteto Negro with Paulo Moura , Zezé Motta and Jorge Degas and also performed with Larry Coryell . He was also involved in the score for Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation (1988).
