Pedro dos Santos (musician)

Pedro dos Santos (born October 2, 1919 in Rio de Janeiro ; † February 23, 1993 ibid) was a Brazilian percussionist and composer . He is also known by the names Pedro Sorongo and Pedro da Lua .

Life

He has played pandeiro since childhood . At the age of 18 he wrote his first composition, a samba for the carnival group Meninas Teimosas . In 1953 one of his compositions, Recordando o Líbano, was recorded on record for the first time . In 1955 he was a member of the Orquestra Tabajara under the direction of Severino Araújo for a time . He then worked for the radio station Mayrink Veiga and recordings with Pixinguinha and Radamés Gnattali followed .

In 1968 the album Krishnanda was released with exclusively his own compositions. In the early 1970s he developed a long-lasting collaboration with the guitarist Sebastião Tapajós , with whom he toured Europe several times . He also worked with Paulinho da Viola , Maria Bethânia , Djalma Corrêa , Elza Soares and Baden Powell , among others .

Instruments

Pedro dos Santos has developed a number of percussion instruments, such as the Bambussom , Somn'água , 5 Tambores , Pramola , Pradeira or Maraganzá .

Appreciation

The guitarist Baden Powell composed the piece Tributo Ao Amigo Pedro Santos in his honor and the Centro Cultural Pedro Sorongo in Rio de Janeiro was named after him.
