Viola grew up in a musical family; his father, the guitarist César Faria, belonged to the choro group Época de Ouro . Against his father's advice, he also became a guitarist; he received lessons from the composer Zé Maria and was heavily influenced by Chico Soares, whom he met in 1959. After he belonged to other samba schools , his cousin Oscar Bigode brought him to his Conjunto Portela in 1963 . In addition to his work as an instrumentalist (initially as an amateur), he began composing sambas and performing them successfully from 1964. In 1965 he contributed three compositions for the album Roda de Samba . In the following year, his title "Memórias de um Sargento de Milícias" won the Carioca Carnival competition . Other compositions by him were awarded at other competitions, such as 1969 "Sinal Fechado".

Since 1966 albums have been released under his own name, but it was not until the album Bebadosamba , which he recorded in 1996 after several years of absence from the studio, sold in more than 100,000 units and was awarded a gold record . Viola also toured internationally, around 1972 with Maria Bethânia and Sebastião Tapajós in Australia.
