August de Boeck
Julianus Marie August de Boeck (born May 9, 1865 in Merchtem ; † October 9, 1937 there ) was a Belgian composer and organist .
Live and act
August de Boeck studied organ from 1880 at the Brussels Conservatory with Alphonse Mailly , from 1885 to 1902 de Boeck was his assistant. He completed his organ studies in 1884 with distinction. He also completed his other fields of study with Hubert Ferdinand Kufferath , harmony , counterpoint and fugue in 1889 with honors. In 1891 he acquired the rare Diplôme de capacité for his virtuoso organ playing at the conservatory.
He had a close friendship with Paul Gilson . Although they were of nearly the same age, de Boeck is often seen as a student of Gilson.
From 1892 to 1921 he was employed as an organist in various churches; 1892 to 1894 at the Onze Lieve Vrouw ter Noodt church in Merchtem, from 1894 in the St. Bonifatius Church in Elsene and from 1900 also in the Carmelite monastery church in Elsene.
From 1909 to 1920 worked as a professor of harmony at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp . Then until 1926 he worked at the Conservatory in Brussels. In 1921 he was appointed director of the conservatory in Mechelen , a position he held until his retirement in 1930.
His compositions are stylistically close to those of Paul Gilson; like the latter, he mixed influences from Richard Wagner and the Russian music of his time, especially that of Rimski-Korsakow , to create a post-romantic style. His opera "La Route d'Émeraude", performed in Ghent in 1921, is considered to be his masterpiece.
