Ronnie Drew (born September 16, 1934 in Dún Laoghaire , Irish Free State , † August 16, 2008 in Dublin ) was a founding member of the Irish folk group The Dubliners . He appeared there as a guitarist and singer . His voice has been described as " charcoal being crushed under a door ".

life and career

Before founding the Dubliners, Drew was a teacher in Spain . In 1962 he was the founder of the Dubliners, which he left in 1974 to pursue a solo career. After his return in 1979, the singer stayed in the band until 1995 before finally leaving the Dubliners to perform again as a solo artist, but performed again with the Dubliners on the 40th anniversary. In 1996 Drew released the album Dirty Rotten Shame , on which the song Drinkin in the day is included. On the album he is supported by U2 singer Bono .

In Drew's honor, numerous Irish artists, including Shane MacGowan , members of the Dubliners, U2, Sinéad O'Connor and Christy Moore recorded the song Ballad of Ronnie Drew in early 2008 . One of his last works was the collaboration with the Dropkick Murphys on the song Flannigan's Ball on their album The Meanest of Times .

On August 16, 2008, Ronnie Drew died of cancer at St. Vincent's private clinic in Dublin.

Ronnie Drew left 2 children and 5 grandchildren. His son Phelim Drew is a film actor.
