Dave Pike

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Samuel "Dave" Pike (born March 23, 1938 in Detroit , Michigan - † October 3, 2015 in Del Mar , California ) was an American vibraphonist . He played mostly jazz ; some of his albums can be assigned to the lounge music segment .

Live and act

Dave Pike learned to play drums from childhood and was self-taught on the vibraphone . In 1954 his family moved to Los Angeles , where he played with Curtis Counce , Harold Land , Elmo Hope , Dexter Gordon , Carl Perkins and Paul Bley . In 1960 he moved to New York and amplified his vibraphone electrically. Between 1961 and 1964 he toured with Herbie Mann and then played with Attila Zoller .

From 1968 he stayed in Germany. Together with Volker Kriegel ( guitar , sitar ), J.-A. He played Rettenbacher ( bass , cello ) and Peter Baumeister ( drums , percussion ) from 1968 to 1972 as the “Dave Pike Set”. The group's last album, Salamao , was released under the name "The New Dave Pike Set" with Eberhard Weber and Marc Hellman instead of Rettenbacher and Baumeister together with the percussion group Grupo Baiafro De Bahia , which includes percussionists Djalma Corrêa and Edson Ernetério de Sant'Ana and Onias Camardelli, recorded in Rio de Janeiro . The concept of the “Dave Pike Set” was quite successful because the boundaries between jazz rock and “psychedelic” pop music were crossed. In addition, Pike made recordings with the renowned Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland Big Band .

In 1973 he returned to Los Angeles, where he played with musicians such as Ron Eschete . At the JazzFest Berlin 2005, Pike performed together with the pianist Christoph Spendel , the guitarist Michael Sagmeister , the bassist André Nendza and the drummer Kurt Billker as the New Dave Pike Set .

Dave Pike died of emphysema on October 3, 2015 at the age of 77 in Del Mar, California .

Trivia

Pike became known to a wider public in 1998 through the piece Mathar , composed by Volker Kriegel , a dance sitar piece that can be heard in the film 23 - Nothing is as it seems . Pike himself can only be heard on the tambourine in this recording of the Dave Pike Set . He has also been known since the 1970s from Big Schlepp , the theme music for the NDR radio show What do you want to know? , which was also composed by Kriegel and recorded with the Dave Pike Set .
