About this picture
General view - view from the Madenburg

Eschbach is a municipality in the Südliche Weinstrasse district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Landau-Land community .

location

Eschbach is located on the eastern edge of the Wasgau , as the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the adjoining northern part of the Vosges are also called. Neighboring communities are - clockwise - Leinsweiler , Ilbesheim near Landau in the Palatinate , Göcklingen , Klingenmünster , Waldhambach and Landau in the Palatinate (exclave). The 476.3 meter high Rothenberg extends southwest of the settlement area . Further to the north-west lies the 523-meter-high Schletterberg , the eastern flank of which lies on the outskirts of Eschbach.

history

The community is first mentioned in a document from the Eusserthal monastery in 1254 as Echibach . Until the end of the 18th century, the place belonged to the rule Madenburg .

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Eschbach was incorporated into the canton of Landau . Then the community moved to the canton of Annweiler in 1815, the place had a total of 640 inhabitants. In the same year it was added to Austria . Just one year later, the place, like the entire Palatinate, changed to the Kingdom of Bavaria . In the following period Eschbach returned to the canton of Landau. From 1818 to 1862 the community belonged to the Landau Landau commissioner ; from this the district office of Landau emerged. In 1832, participants in the Hambach Festival from the town set up a tree of freedom in Wollmesheim after they returned from it .

From 1939 the place was part of the Landau district in the Palatinate . After the Second World War , Eschbach became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . During the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform changed the place on 7 June 1969 in the newly created district Landau-Bad Bergzabern, in 1978 in South County Wine Trail is renamed . In 1972 Eschbach was assigned to the also newly formed community of Landau-Land .

Culture and sights

Above Eschbach is the Madenburg , to whose rule the place belonged. The knights of the castle belonged to the society with the donkey in the 15th century , which is why the nickname donkey, which the neighboring villages gave to the Eschbachers, became established. As a reminder of this, artistically designed donkey sculptures have been set up throughout the village since 2004.
