Großfischlingen is a municipality in the Südliche Weinstrasse district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Edenkoben .
geography
location
The local community is located 4 km southeast of Edenkoben between the Palatinate Forest and the Rhine in the middle of the so-called Gäu . Neighboring communities are - clockwise - Venningen , Altdorf , Freimersheim , Kleinfischlingen , Essingen and Edesheim .
Waters
The Modenbach runs in a west-east direction through the middle of the settlement area. The Kaltenbach forms the southern boundary and the Lachgraben largely the northern boundary.
history
Großfischlingen was first mentioned as Fisckilingen in a document from Lorsch Abbey in 772 . Until the end of the 18th century the community belonged to the Speyer Monastery . On May 28, 1794 it was partially the scene of the battle of Kirrweiler .
From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Großfischlingen was incorporated into the canton of Edenkoben and had its own mairie , which also included Kleinfischlingen. In 1815 the place had a total of 386 inhabitants. In the same year it was added to Austria . Just one year later, the place, like the entire Palatinate, changed to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 to 1862 the community belonged to the Landau Landau commissioner ; from this the district office of Landau emerged.
From 1939 the place was part of the Landau district in the Palatinate . After the Second World War , Großfischlingen became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . During the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform changed the place on 7 June 1969 in the newly created district Landau-Bad Bergzabern, in 1978 in South County Wine Trail is renamed . In 1972, Großfischlingen was assigned to the newly formed community of Edenkoben . .

At the end of 2013, 54.7 percent of the population were Catholic and 25 percent Protestant. The rest belonged to another religion or were non-denominational. On the Protestant side, the community belongs to the parish in the Gäu .

Municipal council
The municipal council in Großfischlingen consists of twelve council members, who were elected in a majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.
mayor
Daniel Köbler (independent) became the local mayor of Großfischlingen on June 14, 2018. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in office for a further five years with a share of 88.98% of the votes. Köbler's predecessor Manuel Spiegel (independent) resigned from office on February 28, 2018 for personal reasons. He took it over on November 19, 2014, as the mayor Bernhard Spiegel, who had been in office since 2010, had not run again.

Reasons for the coat of arms: It was approved by the Mainz Interior Ministry in 1952 . The cross reminds of the former affiliation to the bishopric of Speyer and the fish speak the place name. |

There are currently ten clubs in Großfischlingen. The Youth Red Cross, which won the German championship title in "First Aid" in 2005, was particularly able to distinguish itself.

Böbingen is a wine-growing village and as such part of the Palatinate wine-growing region . There is a single site in Kirchberg on site .

State road 542 runs through the municipality in a north-south direction . The closest train stations are Edesheim and Edenkoben on the Palatinate Maximiliansbahn Neustadt – Wissembourg.

The From Rhine to Wine cycle path and the Franconia-Hesse-Kurpfalz long-distance hiking trail marked with a red cross run through the municipality .

- In 1848, Prof. Georg Hollerith, who was born in Großfischlingen, emigrated to Buffalo , United States. His son Hermann (1860–1929) developed the first apparatus for evaluating punched cards in 1884–1889 . In 1896 he founded the first factory for data processing machines, one of the predecessors of IBM . Today Herrmann-Hollerith-Strasse is a reminder of the town's fake son.
