Bornheim ( listen ^{? / I} ) is a municipality in the Südliche Weinstrasse district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Offenbach an der Queich community , within which it is the smallest local community in terms of population. Bornheim is known for the Pfalzstorch campaign , which successfully resettles the white stork and is based here.

geography

Bornheim is located a few kilometers from the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest in the hilly foothills of the Palatinate wine-growing region near the German Wine Route . The town of Landau spreads to the west of the municipality , to the east the lowland of the Queich river, which flows around 3 km south of Bornheim, mainly used as grassland , defines the now flat landscape of the Upper Rhine Plain . The Hofgraben flows through the community itself and flows into the Lingenfelder Altrhein about 15 km below from the left , an old loop of the Upper Rhine .

Except for Landau, clockwise Essingen and Offenbach an der Queich are adjacent places .

history

Bornheim was first mentioned in a document in the 10th century. From 1500 to 1709, the bishopric of Speyer and the Electoral Palatinate shared rulership, until the village became part of the Electoral Palatinate as part of an exchange deal and remained there until the French Revolution .

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Bornheim was incorporated into the canton of Edenkoben and formed its own Mairie . In 1815 the place had a total of 460 inhabitants. In the same year it was added to Austria . Just one year later, like the entire Palatinate, it became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria . At the same time, the community moved to the canton of Landau . From 1818 to 1862 the community belonged to the Landau Landau commissioner ; from this the district office of Landau emerged.

From 1939 the place was part of the Landau district in the Palatinate . After the Second World War , Bornheim became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . During the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform changed the community on June 7, 1969 in the newly created district Landau-Bad Bergzabern, in 1978 in South County Wine Trail is renamed . Bornheim has belonged to the Offenbach an der Queich community since 1972 , and its administrative headquarters are in Offenbach.

In 2012, 39.8% of the population were Protestant and 39.2% Catholic . The rest belonged to another religion or were non-denominational. The Evangelicals belong to the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate , the Catholics to the Diocese of Speyer . On the Protestant side, the place also forms the parish Essingen-Dammheim-Bornheim together with Dammheim and Essingen .

Elke Thomas (FWG) has been the local mayor of Bornheim since August 21, 2019. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, she was elected for five years with a share of 72.8% of the votes. Her predecessors were Karl Keilen (CDU), who was elected in April 2012 as the successor to the previously deceased local mayor Lothar Bach (CDU), and Dieter Hörner (CDU, term of office 1989-2004).

In the local community there are a total of six objects under monument protection standing, including the Protestant church.

Other buildings that dot the village, which are Wachthaus of 1835, the Storchenscheune with webcams on the roof and white stork-care unit, the Stork Center , City Hall, the by sculptor Gernot Rumpf created Saubrunnen , the Max and Moritz Square , the Hirtenplatz , the school house from 1868 and the village community center.

A nationally known association is the Palatinate Stork. There is also the boules club “Nooh draa” Bornheim ; whose club member Rolando Jecle took part in the German Pétanque Championships in 2008 . The boules area at the sports field can be used free of charge all year round. There is also an amusement park on site.

Other associations are the “Die Wachthäusler” group of friends, the Bornheim children's initiative (KIB) , the Bornheim Diakonie Association , the St. Florian Bornheim Fire Brigade Association and the Concordia choir .

Regular events

BC Bornheim organizes the so-called Witches Night Tournament on April 30th and May 1st every year . The Saubrunnenfest takes place one week after Pentecost . The stork festival of Aktion Pfalzstorch in July or August is connected with an "auction" of the young storks; the proceeds go to stork protection. The Kerwe is held at the beginning of September .

Bornheim is characterized by viticulture and as such part of the Palatinate wine-growing region . The Neuberg single vineyard is located on site .

In the industrial area in the south-eastern part of the district is u. a. the seat of the headquarters of Hornbach Baumarkt AG . The chain's first hardware store opened in Bornheim in 1968.

Since 2006, trolley trips have been taking place on an earlier railway line (see section Transport ) , which serve tourism . The western turning point of the Südpfalz-Draisine is at the level of the Bornheim industrial area.

The federal road 272 (Landau– Speyer ), to which there are two access roads, passes north of Bornheim . The B 272 joins the Autobahn 65 ( Ludwigshafen am Rhein - Karlsruhe ) 2 km to the west at the Landau Nord junction . The circuit road  42 extends through the community. The place is connected to the local transport network via bus line 539 .

In 1872 the Germersheim – Landau railway line was opened through the municipality ; The closest train station was the Dreihof train station in Essingen, which was designed as a common station for Bornheim, Essingen and Offenbach an der Queich. From the beginning of the 20th century there was also a train station in neighboring Dammheim . Due to a lack of profitability, both operating sites were given up a few years before passenger traffic ceased in 1984. The rail systems were largely preserved.
