Edesheim , Esem in the Palatinate , is a municipality in the Südliche Weinstrasse district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Edenkoben , within which it is the second largest local community in terms of both number of inhabitants and area.

location
The municipality is located in the Modenbachtal east of the Palatinate Forest , between Neustadt an der Weinstrasse and Landau , three kilometers south of Edenkoben , between the Haardt - the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest - and the Rhine in the Weinstrasse region . The municipality also includes a total of three exclaves in the Middle Palatinate Forest . Edesheim also includes the Eckel settlement and the Erlenmühle, Forsthaus Wolfseck Haus Guth, Aussiedlerhof, Raiffeisenweg 10, and Aussiedlerhof, Im Leiselfeld residential areas .
Neighboring communities are - clockwise - Edenkoben, Venningen , Großfischlingen , Essingen , Knöringen , Roschbach , Hainfeld and Rhodt unter Rietburg . The easternmost exclave borders clockwise - exclaves in italics - on Weyher in the Palatinate , Burrweiler , Hainfeld and Ramberg . The middle exclave borders on Edenkoben , Gommersheim , Rhodt unter Rietburg, Ramberg, Roschbach , Burrweiler and Hainfeld . The westernmost exclave borders on Elmstein , Rhodt unter Rietburg , Hainfeld , Weyher in the Palatinate and Landau in the Palatinate

In the easternmost exclave the 543.5 m above sea level extends . NHN high Lambertskopf , which is a secondary peak of the Teufelsberg . Waters
The Modenbach , which rises within the central forest enclave of the municipality and forms the northern limit of the easternmost one, flows through the settlement area . The latter is limited to the west by the Ziegelbach . the exclave furthest to the west is bounded in the north by the Helmbach and in the west by the Grobsbach . The Leißelgraben , which is called Lachgraben further east, flows through the north of the municipality . The Bruchbach flows through the extreme south of the district .
history
As early as 714, Edesheim was mentioned under the name “villa Auduino” or “Auduinovilla” in a document from the Weißenburg Abbey , which owned a manor house and two churches here. In 755 and 756 the name Autineshaim was written, later Otdensheim , Ödesheim and Edesheim. The place Edesheim belonged to the bishopric of Speyer until the end of the 18th century .
During the First Coalition War there was also a battle on site. After 1792 French revolutionary troops occupied the region and annexed it after the Peace of Campo Formio (1797) . From 1798 to 1814 the village belonged to the French department of Donnersberg and was assigned to the canton of Edenkoben . In 1815 the community had a total of 1,750 inhabitants. Due to the agreements reached at the Congress of Vienna (1815) and an exchange contract with Austria , the region became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 . From 1818 the community Edesheim was assigned to the Landau Landau in the Bavarian Rhine District, later to the Landau district office.
From 1939 the place was part of the Landau district in the Palatinate . After the Second World War , the municipality within the French occupation zone became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate. During the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform moved Edesheim on June 7, 1969 in the newly created district Landau-Bad Bergzabern, in 1978 in South County Wine Trail is renamed . In 1972 the community was assigned to the also newly formed community community of Edenkoben .

The Jewish community once resident there owned a synagogue . On October 22, 1940, the Jews living in Edesheim were deported as part of the Wagner-Bürckel campaign .

On September 30, 2019, the proportion of Catholic citizens was 55.8 percent, Protestant 19.3 percent and the other 24.9 percent.

Sigrid Schwedhelm-Schreiner became the local mayor of Edesheim on June 25, 2019. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, she was elected for five years with 75.39% of the vote. Her predecessor Christian Sternberger (CDU) did not run again after ten years in office. Before that, Alfred Metzger (CDU) was the local mayor of Edesheim for 17 years.

Culture and sights
Cultural monument
The Edesheim castle and the town centers of low-Edesheim and upper Edesheim are each as monument zones reported. The former was built by the Weißenburg Abbey before 756 . In the Palatinate War of Succession , the castle was completely destroyed in 1694 and had to be rebuilt, only the water systems from the 12th century could be preserved. After the castle lost its importance, it was finally demolished in 1748. It was not until the 19th century that the palace began to be rebuilt in a contemporary style. It changed hands several times and was completely renovated around the year 2000. Since then there has been a hotel on the premises.
There are also numerous individual objects that are under monument protection , including the Kupperwolf Castle . It was built by Franz Adam Baron von Holbach, the uncle of the enlightener and philosopher Paul Henri Thiry d'Holbach . It was named after its future owner, an Austrian general.

The three forest dexclaves and the western part of the settlement area are located in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park , which in turn is part of the Palatinate Forest-Vosges du Nord biosphere reserve .

The local community has the reading and singing club founded in 1869 and the MGV Concordia Edesheim , which was founded in 1878. There is also a local and cultural association .

economy
The place is significantly influenced by viticulture and is one of the largest wine-growing communities in the Palatinate . The large Ordensgut as well as the individual layers of forest , almond slope , rose garden and castle are located on site . The Anselmann winery is located in Edesheim .
In the course of the Haingeraide , Edesheim was also involved in the so-called third Haingeraide , which was dissolved in the early modern period and which was partially subordinated to the community.

- Street
The state roads 506 , 507 and 516 run through the municipality . The state road 506 connects the community with the Ramberger Tal and the state road 507 with Albersweiler and Speyer . The state road 516 leads from Bad Dürkheim to Landau in the Palatinate . It is also on bus route 501 of the Rhein-Neckar transport association , which leads to Landau and Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. The federal motorway 65 runs through the east of the district in a north-south direction ; The Palatine Wine Road service area is located in this area .

The stop and former train station Edesheim (Pfalz) is located on the Neustadt – Wissembourg railway line, which was opened in 1855, and is served by the RB 51 (Neustadt – Karlsruhe) and RB 53 (Neustadt – Wissembourg) lines, so that two trains stop on site every hour and direction do. The station is located on the eastern edge of the settlement within a long S-curve. Until the 1980s, the former station was last served by Landau from freight traffic.
During renovation work, the central platform was replaced by a side platform and the station was dismantled as a stop. The former freight track has since been dismantled. The reception building corresponds to the typical type of construction in the Palatinate. Its head structure is gable towards the railway side. The windows are rectangular in shape. Like the earlier goods shed, the building is no longer of any importance for rail operations and is now used as a restaurant .
Institutions
In Edesheim there is a primary school which bears the name of the place and which is also responsible for the neighboring communities Großfischlingen and Kleinfischlingen . There is also a kindergarten on site and an outdoor swimming pool in the west of the district.
tourism
The cycle path from the Rhine to the wine runs through the municipality . The Pfälzer Weinsteig and two other hiking trails, one of which is marked with a red bar and another with a red dot , cross the easternmost forest enclave. A path marked with a yellow dot leads through the westernmost one .
